Your Ultimate Guide to Vegan Dining in Maui: Savoring Plant-Based Paradise
Dreaming of a Hawaiian getaway to Maui but concerned about finding delicious vegan food? Worry no more! The breathtaking island of Maui is a haven for plant-based eaters, offering an abundance of vegan restaurants and diverse food options to fuel all your island adventures. From the lush landscapes of the Road to Hana to the vibrant towns of Kihei, Lahaina, and Paia, healthy and delicious plant-based choices await you around every corner.

Where to Stay in Maui for the Best Vegan Experience
Before diving into Maui’s incredible vegan food scene, securing the right accommodation can significantly enhance your trip. We highly recommend booking a vacation rental equipped with a full kitchen. This approach proved most effective for us, allowing us to prepare two meals a day at our condo and enjoy one meal out. Maui, being a stunning island destination in the middle of the Pacific, comes with a price tag, so expect food costs to be a bit higher than what you might be accustomed to at home. For international travelers, especially from countries with less favorable exchange rates, cooking some meals can lead to substantial savings, freeing up your budget for unforgettable excursions and experiences. However, if dining out for every meal is your preference, rest assured that Maui boasts more than enough vegan establishments to satisfy your cravings.
Our stay in a North Kihei vacation rental was exceptional. We found Kihei to offer superior beaches, a more central location for exploring the entire island, and a distinctly relaxed, chill atmosphere that perfectly suited our travel style. In contrast, Lahaina and Ka’anapali tend to be more upscale, featuring numerous resorts and luxury hotels. While these areas also offer a plethora of dining options, including many vegan-friendly spots, Kihei provided a more laid-back base. Regardless of where you choose to stay, a rental car is absolutely essential for maximizing your Maui experience. Having your own vehicle grants you the freedom to explore hidden gems, chase waterfalls, and discover remote beaches at your own pace.

Upon arrival, a smart move is to stock your fridge and pantry with essential vegan staples. This ensures you have convenient options for breakfasts, lunches, and simple dinners. Our top recommendation for grocery shopping was Mana Foods in Paia, known for its extensive organic and natural selection. However, you’ll find major grocery chains like Times Supermarket, Safeway, and Foodland conveniently located throughout the island. For more specialized plant-based ingredients and local produce, natural food stores like Farmer’s Market Maui in Ka’anapali, Whole Foods in Kahului, and Hawaiian Moons in Kihei are invaluable resources. By keeping our at-home meals simple and repetitive, we minimized costs, effort, and food waste, allowing us more precious time to immerse ourselves in Maui’s natural beauty and explore all the island has to offer.
Best Natural Food Stores for Vegan Groceries in Maui
Maui is well-equipped with natural food stores that cater wonderfully to vegan diets. These stores often carry a wider array of specialty vegan products, organic produce, and health-conscious items that might be harder to find elsewhere. Here are our favorites:
- Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods in Kihei: A local favorite in South Kihei offering a great selection of groceries, a juice bar, and deli items.
- Farmer’s Market Maui in Ka’anapali: More than just a market, this spot doubles as a deli with fantastic grab-and-go vegan options.
- Mana Foods in Paia: Our absolute favorite for its extensive selection of vegan groceries, deli items, and overall competitive pricing.
- Down to Earth Organic and Natural in Kahului: A large natural food store offering a hot bar, deli, and a wide range of organic and vegan products.
- Whole Foods in Kahului: The familiar chain, providing a reliable source for organic and vegan groceries near the airport.
Beyond these natural food havens, major supermarkets like Times Supermarket, Safeway, and Foodland are scattered across the island and stock all the basic necessities for a vegan diet. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for charming roadside fruit stands and local farmer’s markets, especially as you drive into North Kihei or south of Lahaina. These offer an excellent opportunity to purchase fresh, seasonal produce directly from local growers, often at great prices.

Simple Vegan Breakfast Ideas for Your Maui Condo
Starting your day with a nutritious, homemade vegan breakfast can be both cost-effective and delicious. Here are some easy ideas:
- Abundant Tropical Fruit: Embrace Maui’s bounty with generous servings of fresh papaya, sweet mango, ripe bananas, creamy avocado, and vibrant pineapple. Pair with a squeeze of lime for extra zing.
- Non-Dairy Yogurt Parfait: Layer your favorite non-dairy yogurt (almond, coconut, or soy-based) with granola, fresh fruit, and a drizzle of local honey or maple syrup.
- Avocado Toast with a Twist: Elevate classic avocado toast with a sprinkle of “everything bagel” seasoning, red pepper flakes, or a squeeze of lime. Add sliced tomatoes or cucumbers for extra crunch.
- Almond Butter Toast with Banana: A simple yet satisfying classic. Spread almond butter on whole-grain toast and top with sliced bananas and a dash of cinnamon.
- Granola & Non-Dairy Milk/Yogurt: A quick and easy option. Choose a wholesome granola and pair it with almond, soy, or oat milk, or mix into non-dairy yogurt for a hearty start.
- Vegan Cereal: A convenient choice for busy mornings. Opt for your favorite plant-based cereal with a splash of non-dairy milk.
- Freshly Brewed Coffee or Tea: Don’t forget your morning caffeine fix! Many grocery stores stock excellent local coffee beans to brew in your condo.

Quick Vegan Lunch and Dinner Ideas for Your Maui Stay
After a day of exploring, easy and satisfying vegan lunches and dinners at your rental mean more relaxation and less stress:
- Vibrant Green Salads: Combine fresh local greens with an array of chopped vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Add chickpeas, black beans, or grilled tofu for protein and finish with a simple vinaigrette.
- Grilled Vegan Sausages: Grab some Field Roast or similar vegan sausages from a local store. Grill or pan-fry them and serve in buns with your favorite toppings like relish, mustard, and sauerkraut for a delicious “hot dog” experience.
- Comforting Vegan Mac and Cheese with Veggies: Pick up a box of Annie’s vegan Mac and Cheese and stir in some steamed or roasted broccoli for an easy, comforting meal.
- Speedy Veggie Stir-fry with Tofu: Sauté pre-cut vegetables with pressed tofu and your favorite stir-fry sauce. Serve over instant brown rice or quinoa for a quick and healthy dinner.
- Avocado, Hummus, Tomato, and Lettuce Sandwiches/Wraps: A classic and refreshing option. Spread hummus on bread or a tortilla, layer with sliced avocado, fresh tomatoes, and crisp lettuce. Add sprouts or cucumber for extra freshness.
With your kitchen stocked and these simple meal ideas in mind, you’re perfectly prepared to enjoy the stunning beauty of Maui while effortlessly maintaining your vegan lifestyle. Now, let’s explore the best vegan-friendly establishments across the island!
The Best Vegan Restaurants and Eateries in Maui
Maui truly shines when it comes to plant-based dining. From dedicated vegan establishments to conventional restaurants with excellent vegan options, you’ll find a fantastic array of choices. We’ve organized this comprehensive list by geographical area to help you plan your culinary adventures efficiently and avoid excessive zig-zagging across the island. Given Maui’s manageable size, most places are within comfortable driving distance. We previously shared our Maui itinerary here, which can assist in coordinating your food stops with your activities.

Beyond the dedicated vegan spots, many Thai, Mexican, and Indian restaurants on Maui are inherently vegan-friendly. Often, a few simple requests can transform their menu items into delicious plant-based meals. The overall quality of food was consistently fresh and flavorful, but we found ourselves so engrossed in Maui’s natural wonders – the stunning beaches, invigorating hikes, the epic Road to Hana, and the enchanting jungles and waterfalls – that dining became a delightful complement rather than the central focus of our trip.

In conclusion, eating vegan in Maui is a non-issue for most travelers. While it might require a bit more navigation if you’re dining at high-end steakhouses or seafood joints, a relaxed and casual approach, similar to ours, will make finding delicious vegan options effortless. Happy travels and enjoy every plant-based bite!
Lahaina and Ka’anapali (North West Maui)
The lively west side of Maui, encompassing Lahaina and Ka’anapali, is a popular tourist destination brimming with dining opportunities. You’ll find a fantastic selection of vegan-friendly spots amidst the shops and historical sites.

Farmer’s Market Maui
Nestled in Lahaina near Honokowai, Farmer’s Market Maui is a charming deli and grocery store that’s a true gem for vegans. They offer an impressive selection of grab-and-go items, fresh smoothies, and prepared meals like sandwiches and wraps, perfect for a quick breakfast, a healthy takeaway lunch, or a picnic on the beach. This spot is versatile, catering to breakfast, lunch, and dinner needs.

Choice Health Bar
With multiple locations in Lahaina and a new one planned for Paia, Choice Health Bar is a must-visit for health-conscious vegans. We absolutely loved our meal here, experiencing a menu focused on vibrant, nutritious options. You can expect refreshing kombucha, wholesome acai bowls, delicious smoothies, and convenient grab-and-go selections like wraps and chia pudding. Their “healthy plate lunch” is a standout, often featuring a generous kale salad, lentil soup, and even a small dessert – a truly satisfying and complete meal. Choice Health Bar is an excellent choice for any meal, from breakfast to dinner.

A’A Roots
A’A Roots quickly became one of our favorite spots. This cozy and inviting cafe offers a diverse menu that caters wonderfully to vegans. You’ll find an assortment of grab-and-go items such as wraps, chia puddings, and fresh juices, alongside a comprehensive menu of made-to-order smoothies, custom acai bowls, hearty sandwiches, flavorful curries, and indulgent vegan treats like croissants and raw cheesecakes. Their salads and Buddha bowls are also highly recommended. With ample seating in a friendly environment, A’A Roots is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We particularly enjoyed the soba noodle salad and a refreshing smoothie.

Farmacy Health Bar
While we visited the Farmacy Health Bar in Wailuku, they also boast two convenient locations in Lahaina, making them easily accessible. This health-focused eatery specializes in revitalizing acai bowls, fresh smoothies, wholesome sandwiches, and crisp salads. We particularly enjoyed their salads and smoothies, finding them both delicious and energizing. The Wailuku location is primarily a takeout spot, but it does offer some bar seating for those who prefer to dine in. Their sandwiches also looked incredibly appealing. Farmacy Health Bar is a fantastic option for a healthy breakfast, lunch, or dinner on the go.
Coconut Caboose
Discover the delightful Coconut Caboose truck conveniently parked on the side of the highway north of Ka’anapali. This is an essential stop if you’re exploring Nakalele Point and the surrounding area – a truly breathtaking drive that we wholeheartedly recommend. This small, charming food truck offers an array of incredible coconut-based treats, including creamy coconut gelato, refreshing shaved ice, and other unique coconut delights. We savored their plain coconut gelato, which was simply exquisite and a perfect treat on a warm Maui day.
Kahului and Paia (Central Maui)
Central Maui, home to the airport in Kahului and the charming surf town of Paia, is a bustling hub that offers a surprising number of excellent vegan and vegan-friendly establishments. Paia, in particular, is known for its bohemian vibe and health-conscious food scene.

Island Fresh Cafe
Situated on the main road leading towards Makawao in Paia, Island Fresh Cafe boasts a lovely, shaded patio that provides a welcome respite from the sun. While our $10 smoothie didn’t quite impress, the cafe does offer several appealing vegan food options. Its tranquil outdoor seating area makes it a pleasant spot to relax and grab a coffee, enjoy breakfast, or have a casual lunch or dinner. It’s an ideal place to unwind and soak in the Paia atmosphere.

Paia Bowls
For a quintessential Maui experience, head to Paia Bowls, a dedicated smoothie and acai bowl shop located right in the heart of Paia. They provide a delightful shaded patio where you can comfortably savor your colorful bowl. You’ll easily find them on the left-hand side as you enter town, with convenient public parking available across the street. After enjoying a refreshing acai bowl, take a short stroll over to Mana Foods – it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some additional vegan snacks and treats for your beach day or onward journey.
Down to Earth Organic and Natural
Down to Earth is a large, well-stocked natural food grocery store located in Kahului, making it a convenient stop, especially after arriving at the airport. This store is a treasure trove for vegans, offering an extensive selection of local organic produce, bulk foods, and countless vegan-specific groceries. Their deli section is a highlight, featuring a hot food bar (including delicious vegan pizza slices!), a variety of cold salads, freshly pressed juices, invigorating smoothies, and an assortment of vegan baked goods. You’ll also find kombucha on tap, a coffee bar, and a made-to-order sandwich menu. Down to Earth is perfect for stocking up your rental kitchen, grabbing ingredients for a picnic, or enjoying a quick, healthy lunch or dinner.
Kuao Store
Situated just south of Paia, Kuao Store is a small but incredibly convenient grocery store, especially if you’re embarking on the epic Road to Hana adventure. Its early opening time at 6:30 am allows you to grab essential coffee and snacks before hitting the road. We made sure to stop by right when they opened for almond lattes and a selection of vegan road trip provisions. A standout find was a delicious papaya with cashew cream, coconut, and cacao nibs. We also picked up some chickpea chips and Evolved Eating chocolate, ensuring we were well-fueled for the scenic drive. Kuao Store offers a thoughtful selection of snacks, grab-and-go options, sandwiches, a full coffee bar, fresh produce, and juices.

Mana Foods
A visit to Mana Foods in Paia is an absolute must for any vegan traveler to Maui. This store not only boasts an impressive array of vegan groceries but also often offers better prices compared to larger chains like Safeway in Kihei or Lahaina. You could easily spend an hour browsing their extensive selection of unique and exciting vegan products. Mana Foods features a fantastic deli with numerous takeaway options and a dedicated smoothie bar serving delicious smoothies and acai bowls. It’s an excellent spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, treats, or simply stocking up your kitchen. Don’t forget to explore the huge selection of vegan cookies and treats near the checkout aisles – the macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies are a particular highlight!

Mo-Ono Hawaii (Food Truck)
For an unparalleled acai bowl experience, seek out Mo-Ono Hawaii, conveniently located in the food truck park near the airport in Kahului. This food truck specializes in one thing only: acai bowls, and they do it exceptionally well! Their focus on a single item ensures top-notch quality and flavor. Mo-Ono was hands down our favorite acai bowl on Maui – consistently delicious and reasonably priced. You can choose from three sizes and customize your bowl with all your preferred toppings, guaranteeing a perfect treat every time.

Thai Mee Up (Food Truck)
Also found in the vibrant food truck park near Kahului airport, Thai Mee Up offers some of the best Thai food we sampled on Maui. After a long day of hiking, their fast, reasonably priced, and incredibly delicious meals were exactly what we needed. A bonus: it’s conveniently parked right across from Mo-Ono, allowing you to easily grab an acai bowl for dessert! If you’re concerned about ingredients, remember to ask if they use fish sauce in their curries. One minor drawback was the use of styrofoam containers; for future visits, we’d definitely bring our own reusable containers, as many acai bowl spots and food trucks on Maui tend to use plastic.
Thai Spice
Located in Paia, Thai Spice offers a convenient option for Thai cuisine where nearly anything on the menu can be made vegan upon request. While we found it to be a decent option in a pinch, it didn’t quite live up to the exceptional experience we had at Thai Mee Up. This small cafe is situated just south of the main traffic lights in Paia and offers both dine-in seating and takeaway services. It’s a reliable choice if you’re looking for customizable vegan Thai food in the area.
Kihei (South West Maui)
Kihei, known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed vibe, is a fantastic area for vegan travelers. This South West Maui town boasts a variety of eateries, from food trucks to natural grocery stores with deli options, ensuring plenty of delicious plant-based choices.

Brekkie Bowls
Perfectly situated outside Makena Crossfit, Brekkie Bowls is an ideal post-workout stop if you’re active during your vacation. This food truck offers customizable acai or pitaya bowls, allowing you to select your preferred toppings for a personalized and refreshing treat. At $10 for a large bowl, it’s a delicious and satisfying way to refuel. These vibrant, nutrient-packed bowls are simply a “YUM!” experience after a good sweat session or any time you crave a healthy, cool snack.

A coffee bar completes the experience, making Hawaiian Moons an excellent stop for breakfast, coffee, or a quick, healthy lunch or dinner. It’s truly a one-stop shop for vegan needs in Kihei.

Wow Wow Lemonade
For vibrant smoothies and refreshing acai bowls in Kihei, Wow Wow Lemonade is an outstanding choice. Conveniently located in the outdoor Azeka Mall, this spot offers an extensive menu of creative smoothies, fresh-squeezed juices, and wholesome bowls. Whether you’re seeking a light breakfast, a healthy snack to carry you through the afternoon, or a sweet and guilt-free dessert, Wow Wow Lemonade delivers delicious plant-based options in a cheerful setting.

Joy’s Place
Joy’s Place is a charming and inviting cafe nestled in central Kihei. While not exclusively vegan, this delightful eatery is incredibly vegan-friendly, featuring a dedicated selection of vegan options and the flexibility to adapt most menu items to suit a plant-based diet. We thoroughly enjoyed their ultimate veggie wrap, made even more flavorful with vegan pesto. Their menu also includes all-day breakfast options, a variety of wraps and sandwiches, and refreshing smoothies. Joy’s Place is an excellent spot for a healthy and satisfying lunch or breakfast in a cozy atmosphere.

Veg-Out (Food Truck & Restaurant)
Veg-Out offers two fantastic locations to satisfy your vegan cravings: a popular food truck in Kihei and a restaurant in Haiku. Their menu boasts a delectable array of vegan dishes, including savory vegan pizza, classic pad Thai, and tempting vegan desserts, among other options. We were particularly impressed with the pad Thai from their Kihei food truck – it was a generous portion, easily enough to share for dinner, and bursting with flavor. We also indulged in their vegan chocolate cake, which was absolutely amazing and a perfect end to the meal. Veg-Out is a reliable choice for hearty and delicious plant-based comfort food.
Road to Hana (East Maui)
Are you prepared for the legendary Road to Hana? If you’re in Maui and contemplating this iconic day trip, our advice is simple: DO IT! We had an absolutely incredible time, and while the winding, narrow road can be a bit challenging at times, the breathtaking scenery, secluded beaches, lush jungles, and cascading waterfalls make every moment worthwhile. It’s a truly unforgettable and awe-inspiring experience, and thankfully, you’ll find plenty of delicious vegan food options along the way and within Hana itself to keep you fueled.
Jaw’s Cafe
Conveniently located at the very start of the Hana Highway, quite close to Paia, Jaw’s Cafe is a perfect first stop before your epic journey. This is the place for truly delicious, creamy coconut ice cream. Made from scratch with local ingredients, it’s a refreshing and indulgent vegan treat that perfectly complements the tropical surroundings. Don’t miss out on this unique culinary experience!
The Surfing Burro (Food Truck)
While we didn’t personally have the chance to dine at The Surfing Burro, it’s a noteworthy food truck located in the same park as Ae’s Thai Food in Hana. This truck offers a tempting selection of Mexican cuisine, and importantly, they feature several appealing vegan Mexican options on their menu. If you’re craving some plant-based tacos, burritos, or other Mexican delights while exploring Hana, The Surfing Burro is definitely worth checking out.

Ae’s Thai Kitchen (Food Truck)
We enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Ae’s Thai Kitchen before making our journey back from Hana. This food truck serves up genuinely delicious Thai cuisine with an impressive array of vegan options. We particularly savored the drunken noodles with tofu, a flavorful and satisfying dish that hit the spot after a morning of exploration. If you’re looking for authentic and customizable vegan Thai food in Hana, Ae’s Thai Kitchen is an excellent choice.
More Highly-Rated Vegan Food Options on Maui
While we couldn’t personally try every single vegan-friendly spot during our visit, the following restaurants consistently come highly recommended by other plant-based travelers. If you have the opportunity to visit any of these, please let us know your thoughts!
Maui Kombucha (Raw Vegan)
Located in Haiku
We truly regretted not fitting in a visit to Maui Kombucha. Located in Haiku, which is not far from Paia if you’re heading towards Hana, it’s an ideal stop if you’re exploring Upcountry Maui or returning from Hana or Twin Falls. It’s approximately a 40-minute drive from Kihei. You can find them discreetly located behind the post office in Haiku. As the name suggests, they brew their own fantastic kombucha, but that’s just the beginning. Maui Kombucha offers a full menu of raw vegan fusion cuisine, with daily specials featuring both raw and cooked vegan items for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and snacks. Expect creative dishes like fresh salads, inventive flatbreads, flavorful wraps, raw pizzas, and even raw lasagna – a true culinary adventure for the health-conscious vegan.

Beyond the food, Milagros boasts a fantastic patio, making it an excellent spot to simply stop for a refreshing drink and soak in the vibrant Paia atmosphere, even if you’re not planning a full meal.
Maui Flatbread Company (Vegan Options)
Located in Paia
The Maui Flatbread Company in Paia is a popular spot that also caters to vegans with thoughtful options. While they offer salads, their standout vegan item is a specially crafted flatbread. It sounds absolutely delicious, and we wish we had found time to try it! This plant-based masterpiece features their organic tomato sauce as a base, topped with sweet organic caramelized onions, fresh mushrooms, local Haiku organic tomatoes, vibrant Maui spinach, and a homemade garlic oil, all seasoned with their unique blend of organic herbs. It promises a fresh, flavorful, and truly local vegan pizza experience.

With multiple locations across Maui, including Kihei, Lahaina, and Kahului, it’s easy to find a spot wherever you are on the island. Their menu features a dedicated “vegetarian favorites” section, and the best part is that all these items can be easily customized to be vegan. For a healthy and quick lunch, we’d recommend their burrito with black beans, rice, guacamole, greens, and tomato, or their tacos, or the vegetarian bowl packed with rice, black beans, potatoes, greens, tomatoes, and a side of chips.
