Chiew Lan Lake: Khao Sok’s Verdant Wonderland

When planning our unforgettable journey through Thailand, one destination immediately captivated my imagination: the breathtaking Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani Province. Every article, every image I encountered only intensified my desire to witness its splendor firsthand. Now, having experienced its magic, I can unequivocally say it was an endeavor well worth undertaking, even amidst an unexpected bout of illness that tested our resolve.

At the very heart of Khao Sok National Park lies its most dazzling jewel: Chiew Lan Lake, also known as the Rajjaprabha Dam Reservoir. This immense 165-square-kilometer artificial lake, born from the construction of a dam, transports visitors to a realm where time seems to stand still, offering an unparalleled immersion in nature.

Journeying to the Heart of the Rainforest: Our Arrival in Khao Sok

Our adventure began after a delightful stay in northern Chiang Mai. We opted for a direct flight to Surat Thani, which serves as a gateway to the southern wonders of Thailand. From Surat Thani, our next leg was the journey to our chosen accommodation in Khao Sok. However, this particular travel day presented an unforeseen challenge: my husband, Derek, had been struck with food poisoning the night before. His determination to push through, despite feeling incredibly unwell, was truly remarkable. Staying put would have meant forfeiting pre-booked flights and hotel reservations, a predicament no traveler wishes to face. I honestly don’t know how he managed, but with sheer willpower, we commenced our southward trek towards Surat Thani.

Upon arrival at Surat Thani, we were met by a wave of intense 35-degree Celsius heat and stifling humidity. The initial plan involved a combination of taxi, public bus, and a final walk to reach our hotel, located some 130 kilometers away. Given Derek’s condition, this multi-step journey seemed entirely unfeasible. Comfort and directness became our top priorities. We quickly found a taxi driver and negotiated a 1700 Thai Baht fare for a direct, air-conditioned ride straight to our resort in Khao Sok. While it was the most we spent on transportation during our entire trip, that day, it felt like a priceless investment in comfort and peace of mind. The cool, private sanctuary of the taxi was a saving grace. The only distressing part of the drive was witnessing two dogs tragically run over on the highway, a heartbreaking sight that unfortunately highlighted the prevalence of stray animals along Thailand’s roads. For the remainder of our journey, I found myself constantly on edge, asking our drivers to honk at any dogs by the roadside, a small gesture that, while perhaps ineffective, offered me a sliver of comfort.

A Warm Welcome at Khao Sok Paradise Resort

The drive from Surat Thani into Khao Sok is a picturesque transition from the mundane to the magnificent. As we neared the national park, the landscape gradually transformed, becoming increasingly rural. Thick, lush, and incredibly vibrant jungles began to emerge on all sides, painting a dreamy panorama that hinted at the wild beauty awaiting us. Eventually, we arrived at the Khao Sok Paradise Resort, where we were warmly greeted by its friendly owners. This husband-and-wife team exuded genuine hospitality and proved to be immensely helpful throughout our stay. After assisting Derek to our cozy treehouse room so he could finally rest, I returned to the reception to arrange our much-anticipated trip to Chiew Lan Lake for the following day.

Khao Sok Paradise Resort perfectly embodies a rustic, peaceful, and wonderfully cozy charm. For just $40 a night, we enjoyed a lovely treehouse room equipped with air conditioning – an absolute necessity in the relentless heat and humidity of the jungle. With Derek sound asleep and beginning his recovery, I seized the opportunity to unwind. I enjoyed a few beers on my own, chatting with fellow travelers, and savoring a delicious pesto pasta for dinner. It was a tranquil evening spent catching up on my journal entries, accompanied by relaxing music drifting from the open-air restaurant and the mesmerizing symphony of the jungle coming alive in the background. The resort truly lived up to its name, offering a serene escape amidst nature.

The Enchantment of Chiew Lan Lake: Floating Bungalows and Jungle Sounds

The next morning, having booked an overnight group tour to Chiew Lan Lake’s iconic floating bungalows, we were ready for an immersive experience. Derek, fully rested after his heroic sleep, was now eager to join the adventure. A comfortable minibus collected us from the resort, embarking on an hour-long scenic drive that brought us to the lake’s entrance point. The anticipation grew with every kilometer, the landscape becoming more dramatic as limestone karsts began to pierce the skyline.

An Unexpected Detour and a Growing Malaise

En route to the lake, our tour group made a stop at a bustling local market. It was here that I began to sense trouble brewing within me. Whether it was a delayed reaction to what Derek had experienced days earlier, or an entirely new gastronomic challenge, my stomach sent clear signals of impending discomfort. The sweltering heat of the seafood market, with its potent and sometimes overwhelming aromas, did not help matters. On a good day, the smells in Thai markets can be intense; feeling unwell, it was simply too much. I managed to locate a nearby washroom for 5 baht, a small price for a brief reprieve, before hastily retreating to the cool sanctuary of our air-conditioned minivan. Eventually, the other members of our group returned, and we continued our journey towards the heart of Khao Sok National Park.

A Breathtaking Arrival at the Floating Huts

We soon arrived at Rajjaprabha Pier, where colorful longtail boats bobbed gently on the emerald-green water, ready to transport us to our floating abodes. By this point, my condition was deteriorating, but I was determined to absorb the incredible beauty unfolding before my eyes: the serene emerald waters, the dramatic karst topography soaring skyward, and the vibrant, lush jungles that framed every vista. The longtail boat ride to the huts lasted approximately 45 minutes. Despite clutching my stomach for much of the journey, the sheer majesty of the surroundings made it impossible not to appreciate. Arriving at the bungalows was truly a sight to behold; tiny, individual huts were perfectly set against a thick wall of impenetrable jungle, with a vibrant fleet of longtail boats tied neatly at the dock. Almost immediately, the jungle symphony began: the distinctive calls of gibbons echoed across the lake, soon joined by the piercing, incessant chirps of cicadas, creating an atmosphere of wild, untamed nature.

Living Simply: Life on the Lake

The floating huts were exactly as described: simple, tin-roofed structures, providing little more than a thin, well-worn mattress on the floor and a rather rudimentary mosquito net. To call them “rustic” might even be a stretch, but for me, they offered an authentic and perfectly acceptable experience. Both Derek and I wasted no time shedding our clothes and plunging into the refreshing, jade-colored water, seeking relief from the oppressive heat. We spent a blissful hour or so floating on inner tubes and logs, drifting lazily across the lake’s surface until the call for lunch. Unfortunately, my stomach was in no condition to partake. Between frequent trips to the shared bathroom facility, the only way I could find any comfort was to remain immersed in the cool lake water. With no air conditioning and temperatures easily reaching 35 degrees Celsius, compounded by the jungle’s humidity, staying cool was a constant battle, especially with my stomach staging an internal rebellion.

Although a vegetarian lunch option was thoughtfully provided, neither of us could manage to eat much; Derek was still recovering, and my own problems were only just beginning. Being sick far from home, deep in the jungle, with no air conditioning, no readily available cold water, shared uphill bathrooms, and no toilet paper, all while trying to rest in a flimsy floating tin hut – it’s an experience I wouldn’t readily recommend. Yet, looking back, the acute discomfort of the illness has faded. What lingers vividly in my memory are the intense, enveloping sounds of the jungle, the perfectly cool water, the warm sun beating down, the distant calls of monkeys and toucans, and the sheer freedom of having no fixed plans for the next two and a half weeks. It was a profound immersion, even with the added challenge.

Afternoon Serenity and Jungle Echoes

After lunch, Derek and the rest of our group ventured out for an invigorating trek into the dense jungle. I, however, remained behind, literally not moving from my chosen spot on a floating log in the lake, save for slow, often painful, trips to the rather questionable washroom facilities. I didn’t mind being left behind, though. I had the entire tranquil expanse of the bungalows almost to myself, with only a few staff members quietly going about their duties. It was incredibly peaceful, a true escape from the world’s hustle. This isolation offered a unique opportunity to simply be present, soaking in the quietude that was occasionally punctuated by the exotic sounds of the rainforest.

The group eventually returned from their trek, and we all spent a lazy afternoon unwinding until dinner time. A beautiful, home-cooked meal was served, filling the air with enticing aromas, but my appetite still hadn’t returned. I managed to force down a few bites of refreshing watermelon and pineapple, but that was the extent of my culinary adventure for the evening. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed the feast, which included freshly caught fish from the lake, rich curries, and flavorful noodle dishes. It looked incredibly appealing, but my stomach clearly had other plans, and I was in no position to argue with its delicate state!

Night Safari: A Symphony of Stars and Sounds

As darkness descended, we all piled back into the longtail boat for a thrilling night safari across the lake. While we weren’t lucky enough to spot any elusive nocturnal animals, the experience was still utterly magical. The sky above opened up to reveal a staggering multitude of stars, a celestial carpet stretching endlessly above us. The air throbbed with the intensifying sounds of the jungle, a dense, vibrant symphony that became even more pronounced under the cover of night. On our return to the bungalows, our boat engaged in an impromptu race with another longtail, tearing through the pitch-black darkness at top speed, side-by-side – a truly exhilarating moment that added an extra dash of adventure to the evening.

After such an exciting, yet tiring, night, neither of us was up for much else. Exhaustion had set in. We simply relaxed in our hut, allowing the powerful, amplified sounds of the nocturnal jungle to wash over us. While the lake environment truly felt peaceful and remote, it was far from quiet. The jungle comes alive at night with an incredible chorus of sounds, an intense symphony that only deepens the sense of being completely immersed in nature’s embrace.

Morning Awakening: Wildlife and Tranquility

We awoke around 5 AM, not to an alarm, but to the distinctive calls of toucans flying back and forth directly in front of our huts. Our guide later told us they often perform this “wake-up call” before flying off, almost as if laughing. I certainly didn’t mind; witnessing a jungle sunrise is an experience not to be missed, with the first rays of light gradually illuminating the dramatic karsts and the misty rainforest canopy. Around 6 AM, we once again boarded the longtail boat for a morning safari, and this time, the jungle’s inhabitants were out to play. We watched in awe as playful monkeys leaped and swung effortlessly between trees – from tiny babies to large, dominant individuals. They stared at us with an intelligent curiosity as we, equally captivated, stared back at them. And if you’ve never heard the incredible calls of gibbons before, it is truly something to behold! We sat in respectful silence for a while, listening to their powerful vocalizations, a sound that elicited laughter born of pure awe.

Breakfast was a welcome spread of fresh fruit and fluffy pancakes, and to my relief, I finally managed to eat a bit. I was still feeling quite weak, having barely eaten in almost 48 hours, but the small meal was a step towards recovery. While our group embarked on another trek to explore some jungle caves, I chose to enjoy a long, peaceful kayak ride with Derek and more refreshing swims. The scorching heat meant we mostly stuck to the shoreline, seeking the shade offered by the dense jungle canopy. As we quietly paddled, a curious group of monkeys followed us, mirroring our movements from the safety of the trees, a truly magical and intimate wildlife encounter.

After a wonderfully quiet and peaceful morning, enjoying the lake mostly to ourselves, the group returned. We shared a final lunch before boarding the longtail boat one last time to head back to Rajjaprabha Pier. From there, we returned to spend another night at Khao Sok Paradise Resort, savoring its comforts before continuing our Thai adventure to the idyllic island of Koh Lanta the following morning.

Recovery and Reflection: The Enduring Magic of Khao Sok

Back at the resort, we stumbled upon a small local shop and discovered some almonds, which seemed to provide a much-needed boost of energy, along with two huge bottles of ice-cold water! My stomach was still in knots, but I was finally, albeit slowly, on the mend. It would be a few more days before I felt completely back to normal. In all my years of traveling, I had never experienced such a debilitating illness abroad, and I can honestly say it was incredibly challenging. Yet, it also could have been far worse. The worst of it lasted only about 12 hours, with the subsequent days focused on recovering from dehydration and exhaustion. I was incredibly grateful to have Derek by my side, offering comfort, just as I had been there for him. When we both finally felt 100% again, approximately four days later, it only made the remainder of our trip feel even more special and appreciated.

Our visit to the floating bungalows on Chiew Lan Lake in the magnificent Khao Sok National Park was an adventure filled with both challenges and unparalleled natural beauty. Despite the personal struggles, the enduring memories are overwhelmingly positive: the dramatic limestone karsts, the serene emerald waters, the symphony of the jungle, and the unique experience of truly disconnecting. It is, without a doubt, a truly special place, and I wholeheartedly recommend visiting if you ever have the chance to explore the wonders of Thailand’s ancient rainforest.
